PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A lawyer for Kip Kinkel has filed a
federal court challenge to Kinkel’s prison sentence of more than
111 years for the 1998 shooting spree that killed his parents and
two fellow Thurston High School students. His lawyer says Kinkel
was mentally ill and the trial court should not have accepted his
guilty plea without ordering a mental health exam.
NEW YORK (AP) – Prosecutors say an 18-year-old accused of
urinating on the leg of another airline passenger during an
Oregon-to-New York City flight will not face charges. Robert Vietze
(VEETZ’) of Warren, Vt., was initially issued a summons for
indecent exposure on the red-eye flight. The JetBlue flight left
Portland late Tuesday and arrived early Wednesday at John F.
Kennedy International Airport. Police say the teen was drunk.
OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon woman has been sentenced to
five years in prison for embezzling more than $100,000 from youth
groups and spending it on shopping sprees and a New York City
vacation. Defense lawyer Kevin Davenport told a Clackamas County
Circuit Court judge yesterday that 45-year-old Renae Marlee Mason
of Lake Oswego chronically abused pain medication, leading the
ex-CPA to “drug-fueled aberrant behavior.”
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The 51-year-old Medford man accused of
killing his wife and four children is due back in court today.
Jordan Adam Criado will be arraigned Friday on aggravated murder
and other indictments handed up this week by the Jackson County
grand jury. He has not yet entered a plea.
NEW YORK (AP) – The U.S. Ski Team has dismissed an 18-year-old
member of its development squad after he was accused of getting
drunk and then urinating on a fellow passenger aboard a JetBlue
flight from Portland to New York City. New York Port Authority
police decided not to charge Robert “Sandy” Vietze (VEETZ), of
Warren, Vt.
SAN DIEGO (AP) – The Seattle Seahawks can only hope Tarvaris
Jackson someday runs their offense as smoothly as Philip Rivers
controls the San Diego Chargers. Rivers went 5 for 6 while leading
an 89-yard scoring in his only series for the Chargers, but Thomas
Clayton rushed for a tiebreaking 25-yard touchdown with 3:05 left
in the Seahawks’ 24-17 victory over San Diego on Thursday night in
both clubs’ exhibition opener. Jackson passed for 13 yards over two
moderately successful series in his debut as Matt Hasselbeck’s
replacement with the Seahawks.

(bahn-a-MEECH’-ee) has picked up support from an influential
Democratic group in her bid to replace former Oregon Congressman
David Wu. The endorsement by Emily’s List is epxected to give
Bonamici a significant boost in fundraising. The special primary
election will be Nov. 8.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Tigard real estate investment manager
has filed to run in the Republican primary for the 1st
Congressional District seat vacated by David Wu. The Oregonian
reports that Jim Greenfield was the 2002 Republican nominee in the
district. The 2010 GOP candidate, Rob Cornilles, is also running in
the primary.
SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners will return to action today
as they open a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox at
Safeco Field. The Mariners are coming off a six-game trip to Texas
and the Los Angeles Angels in which Seattle went 2-4. Rookie
right-hander Blake Beavan is scheduled to start for the Mariners
against Boston righty John Lackey. MLB.com says Boston is 35-22 on
the road this season, best in the American League.
SEATTLE (AP) – On a day when the Mariners took a break from the
action, their website took a more serious tone. The site’s “Video
Corner,” which normally replays game highlights, instead showed a
video message for the “It Gets Better Project,” an effort to
promote diversity and help prevent suicides among gay, lesbian,
questioning and transgendered youth. The message was a joint effort
of the Seattle Mariners, the Storm, Seahawks and Sounders.
