MADRAS, Ore. (AP) – Fire crews in central Oregon are battling a
new wildfire that has burned more than 900 acres – or nearly 1 1/2
square miles – and threatens multiple structures about four miles
west of Madras. The Elk Fire was reported yesterday afternoon.
Pushed by windy conditions, it has burned quickly in light, brushy
fuel, moving north onto U.S. Bureau of Land Management property.
The fire has burned an outbuilding but no houses.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Two Salem, Ore., teens who fatally stabbed a
68-year-old man and wounded another man in random attacks have been
given life prison sentences. Marion County Circuit Judge Joseph
Guimond sentenced 19-year-old Andy Huerta and 16-year-old Martin
Covarrubias-Rivera on Monday. Both pleaded guilty last month to
charges including murder and attempted murder. The attacks occurred
after a robbery in August 2010.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A Jackson County sheriff’s deputy has cited
a driver the deputy says was traveling 104 mph in a 55 mph speed
zone in the Medford, Ore., area. A sheriff’s spokeswoman says the
deputy was parked on State Highway 62 yesterday when a speeding car
zipped by. Carlson says 22-year-old Cody Rogers of Astoria told the
deputy he was driving to his parents’ Shady Cove home. He was cited
for speeding and careless driving.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon State Police say a trooper who
was trying to retrieve a spare tire from under a van when it fell
on him earlier this month is going home after five hours of
surgery. The police say doctors replaced titanium plates and screws
Saturday at a Portland hospital to repair broken facial bones and
head injuries.
