CLEVELAND (AP) – Anthony Vasquez won his major league debut with
a ton of run support and fellow rookie Dustin Ackley had three RBIs
as the Seattle Mariners split a day-night doubleheader, taking the
second game 12-7 over Cleveland. The Indians won the opener 7-5 on
Shin-Soo Choo’s walk-off homer to snap a four-game losing streak.
Choo’s three-run shot gave the Indians the dramatic win, which was
briefly shaken by the 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered in
Virginia.
SEATTLE (AP) – Tanisha Wright had 16 points and Lauren Jackson
scored six of her 13 in the fourth quarter to help the Seattle
Storm beat the San Antonio Silver Stars 63-55 last night. Sue Bird
and Camille Little added 12 points each for Seattle, which moved 1 1/2
games ahead of the Silver Stars for third in the Western
Conference. Sophia Young scored 14 to lead San Antonio, while Bird
became the 16th WNBA player to reach 4,000 points.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The Seattle Seahawks will go into their
third preseason game likely without starting middle linebacker
David Hawthorne and strong safety Kam Chancellor. In fact, all
three of the Seahawks’ projected starting linebackers sat out
practice yesterday with sore knees. Hawthorne, Aaron Curry and
Leroy Hill were all spectators as the Seahawks returned to practice
after an ugly 20-7 preseason loss to Minnesota on Saturday night.
WACO, Texas (AP) – Former Oregon running back Lache Seastrunk is
transferring to Baylor. Baylor announced yesterday that Seastrunk
has signed a financial aid contract and will enroll in the
university and join the football team. He’d been connected to the
probe into Oregon’s use of Texas-based prep scouting service. The
Ducks granted him his unconditional release. He’s from Temple,
Texas, about 35 miles south of Baylor’s campus.
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) – Wyoming coach Dave Christensen has named
freshman Brett Smith as his starting quarterback. The announcement
yesterday isn’t a surprise because Smith, of Salem, Ore., had been
getting all the snaps with the No. 1 offensive unit in Wyoming’s
scrimmages during training camp. Christensen says Smith was ahead
of the other quarterbacks in development and had done a great job
throughout the Cowboys’ training camp.
