ONTARIO, Ore. (AP) – A newspaper reports that the recent
wounding of an eastern Oregon prison inmate by a guard trying to
break up a prison yard fight follows a fatal beating that took
place May 21 at the same prison. Malheur County District Attorney
Dan Norris says inmate Chris Lange was attacked and killed in a
recreation yard at the Snake River Correctional Institution near
Ontario. Norris tells The Oregonian that a murder charge against
another inmate is expected.
McMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) – A judge has dismissed assault and
criminal mistreatment charges that had been filed against a Yamhill
County sheriff’s deputy. Judge Ronald Stone dropped the charges
against Deputy Steve Wilkinson on Monday at the request of the
Clackamas County district attorney’s office. The Yamhill County
sheriff’s office says Wilkinson has returned to his patrol duties.
The sheriff’s office provided no additional details yesterday.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland police captain was named in a
road-rage complaint made in Idaho and has been temporarily
reassigned. Idaho State Police say Capt. Todd Wyatt was stopped on
Aug. 13 in a personal vehicle in Washington state for the incident
in which a driver reported Wyatt brandished a gun near the
Idaho-Washington border. The case has been a referred to the
Kootenai County prosecutor.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Two former neighbors have been ordered to
pay fines and environmental contributions totaling more than
$12,000 after pleading guilty to illegally dumping up to 10
truckloads of boulders into a side channel of the McKenzie River in
2008. Developer Geraldine Betz said she was trying to help a
neighbor with flood problems. The other defendant was Stephen
Ponder, who was a University of Oregon journalism professor and now
lives in Colorado. A state wildlife investigator said up to
three-quarters of the channel’s flow was blocked.
