PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A police officer responding to a report of
a man with an aggressive pit bull trying to board a bus fatally
shot the dog near a north Portland bus stop. Portland police
spokesman Lt. Robert King says shortly after officers arrived at
the scene yesterday afternoon, the dog charged one officer, who
evaded it without injury. King says when the dog charged again, the
officer fired and killed it. Late Wednesday, police identified the
dog’s owner as 61-year-old Richard Cook. They arrested him for
investigation of four misdemeanor charges.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Washington state boy who survived after
being pulled seemingly lifeless from the Pacific Ocean has been
released from a Portland hospital. Oregon Health and Science
University spokeswoman Elisa Williams says 12-year-old Dale
Ostrander (OH’-stran-der) of Spanaway, Wash., was discharged
yesterday. Denise Minge, daughter-in-law of the family’s pastor,
says Dale has been transferred to a hospital closer to home.

SUTHERLIN, Ore. (AP) – A passenger who stuck his arm out a car
window lost the limb when the car tried to pass a tractor-trailer
rig in Southern Oregon but sideswiped it instead. State Police
Trooper Jake Ledbetter said he was told the 33-year-old man was
taken to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland on Tuesday
for an attempt to reattach the arm, which was severed above the
elbow. Ryan Smith of Sutherlin is listed in fair condition.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A Salem family is hoping whoever stole a
small wooden box containing a family member’s ashes will return it.
Jackie Megert tells the Statesman Journal (http://bit.ly/qwzKGt)
that several people were home at the time of the Tuesday afternoon
robbery but were sitting on the front porch. She later found doors
open and the box containing her mother’s ashes was missing, along
with a laptop computer and other items.
