Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A lighting storm raked Central Oregon and
started nearly 200 range fires, one of which has grown into a
complex of five fires that have burned more than 15,000 acres and
forced the evacuation of a science camp for kids. About 55 children
and a dozen staff members had to leave the Hancock Field Station
outside Fossil on Wednesday night. The plan called for them to camp
last night at another campground and then return to Hancock today.
NEWBERG, Ore. (AP) – An occupant of a motel room rocked by an
explosion in the Willamette Valley town of Newberg has told
officers he was cooking hashish there just before the blast.
Newberg-Dundee Police Capt. Jeff Kosmicki says the seriously burned
29-year-old man remains at a Portland hospital. Kosmicki said late
yesterday afternoon that no charges had been filed in the 3 a.m.
blast that forced the evacuation of 123 guests from the Best
Western Newberg Inn. The officer said earlier that police ruled out
a meth lab or a gas line as possible causes.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Federal officials say a 24-year-old man
charged with firebombing a Corvallis mosque last year was motivated
by racial hatred following the arrest of a Muslim man accused of
plotting to set off a car bomb in Portland. Cody Crawford was
arrested Wednesday night at a home in Monmouth. He was indicted on
charges of damaging religious property for racial reasons, which is
a hate crime, and using fire to commit a felony.
CAMAS, Wash. (AP) – Washington and Oregon environmental
officials have joined with the Coast Guard to celebrate the removal
of the last chunk of a derelict barge from the Columbia River near
Camas, Wash. The last section of the Davy Crockett was lifted from
the water yesterday, nearly seven months after the start of a
careful effort to prevent more than 33,000 gallons of bunker fuel
from escaping into the river. The estimated federal costs for the
project are about $20 million, which the agencies say is covered by
the federal Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund.
