Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
CLARNO, Ore. (AP) – Weather conditions have improved for
firefighters battling a 45,000-acre grass fire in central Oregon,
after red flag warnings expired. Fire officials in Prineville said
this morning that there were no flare-ups or problems overnight.
More than 300 firefighters have completed lines around about half
of the fire that was started Wednesday by lightning about 60 miles
southeast of The Dalles.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Triple-A reports the average price of a
gallon of gasoline in Oregon is $3.75, up 3 cents since last week
and 14 cents higher than the national average. Some metro prices
from today’s survey — Portland $3.70, Salem $3.70,
Eugene-Springfield $3.78, Medford-Ashland $3.80.

ELGIN, Ore. (AP) – Some residents in rural Elgin, Ore., want to
disband the police department after a longtime resident was shot
and killed by an officer. Richard Shafer died Aug. 1 when the
officer responded to a domestic dispute at his home. Outside law
enforcement agencies are investigating, and the officer involved
has been placed on leave. Police Chief Kevin Lynch says he believes
the officer will be cleared of wrongdoing. But some residents say
the department should be eliminated and law enforcement services
handled by the county.

REDMOND, Ore. (AP) – The high school principal in one of
Oregon’s largest school districts has been placed on leave, but
officials won’t say why. The Bend Bulletin reports the Redmond
School District is searching for a replacement for Brian Lemos,
principal of Redmond High School. Lemos had his teaching license
suspended in 2000 after an arrest for domestic harassment. He has
had other run-ins with the law, all before 2000.
