SEATTLE (AP) – Felix Hernandez pitched a five-hitter and Mike
Carp hit a two-run double with two outs in the eighth inning to
lead the Seattle Mariners to a 2-1 comeback victory over the Los
Angeles Angels last night. The loss prevented the Angels from
gaining ground on first-place Texas in the American League West.
Hernandez gave up five hits, walked one and struck out nine in his
fifth complete game of the season and improved to 13-11 overall.
SEATTLE (AP) – Jack Zduriencik (zur-EHN’-sihk) has signed a
contract extension with the Seattle Mariners to continue as their
general manager. Terms weren’t released, but it’s believed to be
for at least one year with an option for 2013. Zduriencik is
credited with replenishing Seattle’s depleted talent level in the
minor league system and was named MLB’s executive of the year after
the Mariners went from 61 wins in 2008 to 85 in his first season.
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – Brent Wooten, who played football at
Washington and was head coach at Eastern Washington, has died at
age 72. Wooten died Monday after a lengthy illness. Wooten was a
three-sport athlete at Walla Walla High, where he played for his
father, Boots. He lettered three seasons at Washington, where he
was a halfback and defensive back on the school’s back-to-back 10-1
seasons in 1959 and 1960. Washington played in the Rose Bowl both
seasons. He also spent several years and served as athletic
director at Eastern Washington.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State is going to have a very
different look when it takes the field to open the 2011 season. As
many as 14 first-time starters could step on the Reser Stadium turf
when the Beavers host Sacramento State on Saturday. The change has
been made necessary partly by class turnover but the main culprit
is injuries. Other issues, including academic eligibility and
disciplinary actions, also complicate the picture.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The offseason acquisition of Zach Miller is
looming even larger for the Seattle Seahawks with John Carlson set
to go on injured reserve with a torn labrum. Coach Pete Carroll
announced this week that Carlson would undergo season-ending
surgery to repair his injured shoulder. Carlson suffered the injury
in practice on Aug. 13 diving for a ball in one-on-one drills then
aggravated it blocking later in the practice.
