Health Advisory posted for Driftwood Shores area

A public health advisory to avoid contact with ocean water in the Heceta Beach area has been issued by the Oregon Health Authority.  Curtis Cude, program manager for the Public Health Tracking division of the authority says water samples in the area near Driftwood Shores Resort show higher than normal levels of fecal bacteria which can cause rashes and illnessess.  Cude says contact with the water should be avoided.

The source of the pathogens isn’t clear at this time.  They can come from both shore and inland sources such as storm water, sewer overflows, failing septics and even animal waste.

Florence Public Works Director Mike Miller said warning signs will be posted in the area.  As long as the advisory is in effect, visitors to the beach in that area should avoid wading or walking in water runoff flowing into the ocean.
