Anglers on the Siuslaw River will be able to catch and keep wild coho salmon for the first time in many years beginning September 15th. Wildlife officials say it will be the largest coho fishery in 15 years.
Salmon returns of the threatened species are high enough on 11 water bodies in Oregon to allow the limited angling opportunities. In addition to the Siuslaw, established coho fisheries on Siltcoos and Tahkenitch Lakes will open that date, as will the Nehalem, Tillamook Bay, Nestucca, Siletz, Yaquina, Alsea, Umpqua, Coos and Coquille rivers and Tenmile Lakes.
The daily bag limit for wild coho is one fish on all water bodies, but seasonal limits and other quotas will range from 200 to 1,300 fish.
