Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A federal judge in Portland called a sex
offender a lifelong pedophile as he sentenced the 42-year-old man
to 15 years in prison for possessing child pornography. Judge
Robert Jones called Kevin Heasley a “very disturbed individual”
yesterday, noting that some of the images found on his computer
included babies. The Oregonian reports that Heasley told the judge
he’d been shown images of naked children during his treatment and
that put the idea in his head to view more child pornography.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A son of Oregon House Co-Speaker Arnie Roblan
has died at age 37. Roblan’s office said Aaron Roblan died Monday
in San Francisco. The speaker’s office did not release a cause of
death. Roblan said in a statement that his son had recently been
sick with a suspected auto-immune disorder but was responding to
treatment and had returned to work.
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber says Oregon’s
public schools are stuck in an old-fashioned way of doing business,
and improving education “requires the courage to change.”
Speaking to teachers and administrators in Springfield yesterday,
Kitzhaber said the debate about education is focused too much on
funding for K-12 schools and not enough on student achievement.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Fire officials say two brothers who
drowned at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers
were rescued at the same spot almost two months ago. Portland Fire
& Rescue Capt. Scott Heesacker tells The Oregonian he was shocked
and saddened to see that drowning victims Kissan Kumar and Ram
Kumar were the same men rescued with two others on July 10 in the
same area.
