Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from
The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) – Robinson Cano hit a three-run double, Mark
Teixeira (teh-SHEHR’-uh) and Chris Dickerson homered and the New
York Yankees rolled past Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners
9-3 last night. New York increased its American League East lead to
a season-high four games over the idle Boston Red Sox. With the
one-sided victory, Yankees closer Mariano Rivera didn’t need to
leave the bullpen for a chance at his 600th save.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Seattle Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson
and rookie cornerback Byron Maxwell both have second-degree ankle
sprains and aren’t expected to play this week at Pittsburgh. Coach
Pete Carroll says he’s not sure how long the duo will be out and
needs to see how each recovers. Robinson was hurt when his ankle
got rolled on during a first-quarter run Sunday, while Maxwell was
hurt during a kick return in the second half.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Across the backs of numerous shirts printed
up since Pete Carroll took over in Seattle is the word “finish,”
a reference to making sure his Seahawks close strong in every game.
Instead of finishing, the Seahawks flopped in their season opener
thanks to an absent offense in the first half and a late special
teams meltdown that led to San Francisco’s 33-17 win. It was
Carroll’s second-ever season-opening loss.

WHITEFISH, Mont. (AP) – Eastern Oregon quarterback Chris Ware
has been named the Frontier Conference and NAIA national offensive
football player of the week. Ware, a senior from Rainier, Ore.,
passed for 281 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another score
in the Mountaineers’ 41-33 upset of top-ranked and defending
national champion Carroll College.

UNDATED (AP) – The Big Sky Conference has suspended Eastern
Washington running back Mario Brown for his team’s game against
Montana on Saturday. Brown, a sophomore from Berkeley, Calif.,
threw a punch after the defending FCS champions lost 30-17 at South
Dakota on Sept. 10. Eastern Washington also suspended Brown for the
punch. The suspensions will run concurrently.
