EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The leader of the U.S. branch of a
now-defunct Islamic charity faces sentencing in Eugene today. Pete
Seda was convicted of helping smuggle $150,000 to Saudi Arabia in
2000 that prosecutors maintain was intended for Muslim fighters
battling the Russian army in Chechnya. Seda, an Iranian-born U.S.
citizen was convicted a year ago of tax fraud and conspiracy to
defraud the government.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A Marion County judge will hold a hearing
today on the competency of death row inmate Gary Haugen, whose
execution was blocked by the state Supreme Court. The
twice-convicted killer has asked to waive all his appeals and allow
the state to execute him. The state Supreme Court blocked the
execution and determined that tests of Haugen’s competency were
insufficient.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police say a 72-year-old man is
in custody after robbing a Portland McDonald’s with a knife. Police
say David Roisland entered the McDonald’s through an unlocked door
while the cleaning crew worked and was arrested a short time later
when the workers followed him and called police. When he was taken
into custody he complained of chest pains. He was later booked in
county jail.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Bullets were fired at two homes early
today in east Portland. No one was injured. The police Gang
Enforcement Team is helping with the investigation. Police say the
shootings took place within five minutes of each other just before
1 a.m. Officers found bullet holes in the houses. The first
residence was occupied. No one was home at the second house.
