PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police in Woodburn say a pedestrian was
struck and killed Sunday by an Amtrak train. KGW-TV reports a
Coastal Starlight train was traveling south at 3:21 p.m. when it
hit the man near 500 South Front Street in Woodburn. The train
carrying 219 passengers was traveling from Seattle to Los Angeles.
An Amtrak representative says no one on the train was injured.
Police hasn’t released the victim’s name by early last night.

INDEPENDENCE, Ore. (AP) – Polk County sheriff’s deputies say
there’s no sign of foul play after the body of a 63-year-old man
was recovered from the Willamette River. Emergency personnel pulled
the body of Marvin Leonard Studer out of the water Saturday
afternoon just south of the Buena Vista Ferry landing, south of
Independence. Family members say Studer frequently spent time along
the river. The cause of death is unknown.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A West Salem man is due in court today to
answer charges of trying to bribe public officials. The Statesman
Journal reports E.M. Easterly claims he was only trying to make a
point at a meeting of the Polk Soil and Water Conservation District
on March 9. Easterly was taking issue with a treasurer’s report. A
transcript shows he said he had $600 that he was willing to offer
board members who were prepared to sign a pledge to not approve the
report until it was verified. He’s charged with five counts of
bribing board members.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police are investigating a robbery at a
North Portland Taco Bell where workers were tied up. The suspects,
described as being armed with handguns, were gone when officers
arrived. They made off with an undisclosed amount of money just
after 10 a.m. yesterday. Investigators canvassed the area with a
K-9 unit but no arrests have been made.
