CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – The student body president at Oregon
State University has been impeached and faces a trial Nov. 1 by the
student Senate on a charge of overstepping her authority. The
Corvallis Gazette-Times reports that the dispute is over the
student government’s ties to the Oregon Student Association, a
nonprofit that lobbies the Legislature on behalf of students in
Oregon. President M. Tonga Hopoi (ho-poy) told the association in
the summer that Oregon State was quitting, but other student
leaders objected.
COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – State Sen. Joanne Verger (VER’-jer) says
she won’t run for re-election after a decade in the Legislature.
The Democrat from Coos Bay championed economic development issues
in southwest Oregon and served on the Legislature’s powerful budget
committee for several terms.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Republican congressional candidate Rob
Cornilles has been telling voters he should be elected based on his
business acumen and his experience balancing a budget. But four
years ago the IRS briefly put an $83,000 tax lien on his business.
Cornilles’ campaign says the sports business consultant hired an
inexperienced bookkeeper who didn’t pay federal tax withholdings
for three quarters and didn’t tell anyone she was receiving
warnings from the federal government.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon-based Flir Systems said today that
its third-quarter net income rose 2.8 percent as strong commercial
sales offset weaker growth in government contracts. But its revenue
was less than analysts expected, and it cut its full-year revenue
guidance. Flir makes thermal-imaging and threat-detection systems,
and is headquartered in Wilsonville.
