Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Activist filmmaker Michael Moore has
praised “Occupy Portland” demonstrators and told them their
movement can’t be stopped because “The American people have had
it.” A crowd of protesters at Terry Schrunk Plaza gave Moore a
rousing welcome late yesterday afternoon. KGW-TV reports that Moore
told the Portland demonstrators that theirs was one of the largest
protests he’s seen. Noting tents, he added, “I know it rains a lot
here, but you are clearly in for the long haul.” A handful of
protesters expanded their encampment into the plaza, a federal park
near the two-block encampment that Occupy Portland has had since
Oct. 6.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A group protesting proposed coal export
terminals in the Northwest staged a Halloween “zombie” march to
Bank of America branches in downtown Portland. Police arrested one
man in zombie makeup yesterday after a bank employee identified him
as the person who left a red substance and pieces of paper stuck to
glass in the lobby. Sgt. Pete Simpson says 27-year-old Tim Swenson
was arrested for investigation of criminal mischief and disorderly
conduct. A number of environmental groups are concerned about
efforts by coal companies to build port terminals near Bellingham
and Longview, Wash., to export coal to the Far East.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon man who authorities fear may have
been plotting a sniper attack on a high school football game will
be held without bail until he goes on trial on federal firearms
charges. A federal judge in Medford said yesterday that 26-year-old
Raphael Enrique Amoroso of Grants Pass poses a danger to his
community. Amoroso was arrested on a drunken driving charge Oct. 7
after a police officer saw him leave a parking lot at Grants Pass
High School hours after a football game. Police say he had a loaded
pistol and a novel about a sniper attack on a football game. He
faces federal charges including having a gun on school grounds.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon authorities say a domestic
disturbance suspect more or less fell into their hands – through
the ceiling. Portland police were called yesterday to a home to
deal with an intoxicated man reported as threatening relatives. Lt.
Robert King says they found him barricaded in the attic and
determined he wasn’t a threat, so they began to leave with the
intention of following up later. They say they then heard a crash
and returned to find the man had fallen through the ceiling.
Twenty-one-year-old Aaron Deon Kinsey was not injured.
