Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – Officials in the Portland suburb of
Hillsboro say two Hillsboro school buses collided while taking high
school students home. Fire officials and the Hillsboro School
District say a driver and several students were injured yesterday.
Tuality Healthcare spokesman Gerry Ewing tells The Oregonian that
Tuality Community Hospital received six students with minor
injuries. Hillsboro police Lt. Mike Rouches says one bus was
traveling about 25 mph when it rear-ended the other, which was
stopped at a red light.
ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – Police in Astoria have arrested a
16-year-old high school student accused of trying to recruit a
friend to join him in a planned school shooting. The arrest came
Monday after the 15-year-old friend showed school officials printed
Facebook messages from the other teen. Astoria Deputy Police Chief
Brad Johnston tells The Oregonian “this was not a single
conversation about a fantasy.” He says police learned of a series
of conversations that went on for weeks about a “desire to shoot
people at the Astoria High School.” A Clatsop County judge has
ordered the 16-year-old held for investigation of solicitation to
commit aggravated murder.
ST. HELENS, Ore. (AP) – A Columbia County, Ore., judge has
changed his mind, saying the mental records of a Kalama, Wash., man
accused of killing an Oregon police chief won’t be released before
a Nov. 17 competency hearing. The Daily News reports that Circuit
Court Judge Ted Grove previously said he’d release the documents a
week before the hearing. But he said yesterday he’s decided to wait
in the interest of preserving Daniel Butts’ right to a fair trial.
Butts is charged with aggravated murder in the Jan. 5 shooting
death of 55-year-old Rainier, Ore., Police Chief Ralph Painter
after the chief responded to a report of a suspicious person at a
car stereo shop.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland fire spokesman says carbon
monoxide from a furnace is to blame for the symptoms that sickened
nearly a dozen people last night at a northeast Portland church.
Spokesman Paul Corah says 11 of about 15 people at the Northeast
Baptist Church reported experiencing symptoms of nausea, dizziness,
skin redness and fainting. Nine people were transported to area
hospitals while two more were treated by medics at the scene.
Because of cold weather, the church’s furnace had been turned on
for the first time this season.
