Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
DAMASCUS, Ore. (AP) – Animal welfare workers and police have
seized 95 malnourished cats and two dogs from a suburban Portland
woman. The animals are being examined at the Oregon Humane Society
shelter in Portland and evaluations could lead to animal neglect
charges against the unidentified woman. Her Damascus home
reportedly reeked of feces and urine.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A 2-year-old male wolf from northeast
Oregon has ventured over the crest of the Cascade Range and into
Western Oregon. Biologists say it’s the first confirmed wolf in the
area since one was killed in Douglas County and turned in for a
bounty in 1946. Oregon wolf program coordinator Russ Morgan says
wolves have been known to travel more than 1,000 miles during their
dispersal from a pack.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood
says President Barack Obama’s jobs plan would include money for a
new bridge to carry Interstate 5 across the Columbia River. LaHood
told Portland’s KGW-TV yesterday that “we support it, the money
will be there.” Officials are counting on a big infusion of
federal dollars to help pay for the more than $3 billion project,
which includes a new bridge for vehicles and light rail as well as
new I-5 interchanges in Oregon and Washington.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Supreme Court Justice Robert “Skip”
Durham says he will retire when his term expires after the 2012
election. Durham was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1994 and is
the Court’s longest-serving justice. Less than three weeks ago
Chief Justice Paul De Muniz announced his own retirement. The
departures of Durham and De Muniz will mean a rare election with
two open judgeships for the state’s highest court.
