COQUILLE, Ore. (AP) – A College Place, Wash., man has been
sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to
manslaughter and other charges in the deaths of his wife and her
8-year-old son in a high-speed crash in Coos County. Authorities
alleged that 26-year-old Michael Zubriski Jr. stole knives from a
Myrtle Point hardware store in August and as he drove away, he saw
a police car coming and sped off. At a corner, police say, his car
drifted across the center line and crashed into a truck.
Authorities said 26-year-old Natalia Zubriski died instantly, and
her son, 8-year-old Jolan Wilson, died on the way to the hospital.
Two other children were injured.
AURORA, Ore. (AP) – A bus fire caused evening rush hour delays
on southbound Interstate 5 south of Portland near Aurora. Oregon
State Police say passengers on a Smart transit bus alerted their
driver at about 4:30 p.m. yesterday that smoke was coming from the
rear of the bus. The driver pulled over and evacuated passengers as
the fire grew. No one was injured but the bus was extensively
damaged. The fire’s cause is under investigation.
ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – Searchers are looking for a 71-year-old
California man who went missing on a deer hunting trip in the
Umpqua National Forest. The News-Review reports Steven Litsey of
Paradise, Calif., was last seen Saturday morning when he and a
friend split up to look for deer near the Twin Lakes trailhead in
the Cascade Range about 55 miles east of Roseburg. A dozen
searchers have been joined by eight search dog teams and a
helicopter. Authorities say Litsey was dressed in camouflage and
had water, snacks and fire-making materials.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The owner and operator of a Cyprus-based
ship have pleaded guilty in Portland to felony oil pollution
charges. U.S. District Judge Michael Simon gave A.E. Nomikos
Shipping Inv. Ltd. and Lounia Shipping Co. Ltd. a joint penalty of
$750,000. Half will go to the Oregon Governor’s Fund for the
Environment. They pleaded guilty to one count each of violating the
Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships, and knowingly making false
statements to the Coast Guard. Officials say 300 fish died, but
it’s not clear if they died because of spilled oil.
