Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – A senior housing complex in Springfield
threatens to evict a 70-year-old veteran for hanging the American
flag on an outside wall. Edward Zivica has been clashing for more
than a year with St. Vincent de Paul of Lane County, which runs the
government-subsidized housing. Zivica hangs his flag for
observances such as Veterans Day. Management says that violates
rules against hanging anything on exterior walls.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – A transient who was caught having sex with an
incapacitated woman has been sentenced in Bend to 20 months in
prison. The Bulletin reports Leon Hopper had been charged with rape
and sexual abuse, but prosecutors dropped those charges in return
for his guilty pleas to coercion, strangulation and publicly
indecency. Police found the two in July in a field and said the
woman was unresponsive and physically helpless.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – Bend gas station owner Kent Couch who floated
to Idaho in 2008 in a lawn chair is planning another cluster
balloon adventure – in Baghdad. Couch told KTVZ he was invited by
Iraqi daredevil Fareed Lafta who wants to lift off with him Nov. 15
at a Talent for Youth Conference in the Green Zone. Couch says he
fears entering Iran and would set down right away if the balloons
drift that direction. He and his wife are leaving today for Baghdad
with a film crew.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Can you pull 200 pounds on a trailer while
riding a bike? That’s one of the qualifications for 50 bike riders
UPS is hiring to make deliveries during the holiday season in some
Portland neighborhoods. KGW reports this is the third year the
parcel service has hired bikers. It’s also adding more than 800
seasonal workers to help on delivery trucks.
