SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Supreme Court has declined to
block the execution of convicted murderer Gary Haugen, ending the
last remaining legal challenge to Oregon’s first execution in 14
years. The Supreme Court ruled yesterday on a request by the Oregon
Capital Resource Center, which opposes the death penalty. Haugen
has disregarded his lawyer’s advice and waived his remaining
appeals. He can cancel the Dec. 6 execution if he decides to appeal
to the U.S. Supreme Court. He was sentenced to death for the 2003
murder of a fellow inmate.
ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) – Southern Oregon University police in
Ashland have warned students to travel in pairs if they use a bike
path where a 23-year-old was found slain on Saturday. The Medford
Mail Tribune reports that authorities believe David Grubbs was
killed on the Central Ashland Bike Path about 30 minutes before his
body was found with wounds to the head and neck. Police haven’t
said what weapon they believe was used in the attack.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The mother of a Portland man who vanished
last summer near Bagby Hot Springs fears the worst. Carol Degagne
tells The Oregonian she no longer believes Steven Moline is alive
and wants to know what happened. He was with four friends in June,
driving toward the springs in the Mount Hood National Forest when
they decided to turn around since they were low on gas. They say
Moline wanted to get out and walk.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Police Chief Mike Reese says he’s
decided against a run for mayor. In a statement yesterday, Reese
said he feels he can best serve the community and the Police Bureau
by remaining as chief of police. He also said he appreciates the
support and encouragement he’s received recently as he mulled a
possible race for mayor. Mayor Sam Adams announced in late July
that he wouldn’t seek re-election in 2012.
