Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) – More parents are opting out of school shots for
their kids. An Associated Press analysis found that Oregon is among
eight states where more than 1 in 20 public school kindergartners
aren’t getting all the vaccines required for attendance. That’s
because more parents are seeking exemptions so their kids can skip
some of the shots. The AP found more than half of states have seen
at least a slight rise in the rate of vaccine exemptions in the
past five years.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Volunteers have been responding with
donations after heavy rains last week destroyed thousands of pounds
of pet food at a pet food bank in Portland. Oregon Public
Broadcasting reports rain leaked into the warehouse where pet food
is stored by the non-profit Pongo Fund. It ruined thousands of
pounds of cat food. The non-profit provides pet food to animals of
people who can’t afford it. Executive director Larry Chusid says
donations have poured in since last week and the fund has raised
enough to cover half of its loss.
SWEET HOME, Ore. (AP) – It’s been one month since former Sweet
Home City Council member Laurie Osborne moved with her two children
into the Hope Center homeless shelter. This Thanksgiving was
Osborne’s third as a single mom, and at least the second without a
job that can cover the family’s financial needs. The
Democrat-Herald reports about 17 percent of families in Sweet Home
have an income below the federal poverty rate.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A conservation group in Eugene is troubled
by Lane County’s handling of development and land use proposals.
The Register-Guard says that LandWatch intends to ask the state to
intervene unless the county addresses its concerns. County planners
say they’ve changed the application process while incorporating the
recommendations of conservation groups including LandWatch.
LandWatch says it wants the county to meet timelines and other
requirements for development applications and cites four cases.
