PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The State Board of Higher Education has
unanimously voted to fire University of Oregon President Richard
Lariviere (la-RIV’-ee-AIR’) effective Dec. 28. Board members voted
12-0 yesterday to oust Lariviere, saying they have lost trust and
confidence in his ability to lead the university. Lariviere was
hired in 2009 and has publicly clashed with the Board and with Gov.
John Kitzhaber.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Defense Department says a 21-year-old
Marine from Salem has died in Afghanistan. Officials say Cpl. Adam
J. Buyes died Saturday during combat operations in Helmand
province. The death is under investigation. Buyes was assigned to
3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine
Expeditionary Force, based in Okinawa, Japan. He was a 2008
graduate of McKay High School in Salem.
FOREST GROVE, Ore. (AP) – Police now say a 63-year-old Forest
Grove man found dead in his home was a homicide victim. Neither
Forest Grove police spokesman Capt. Mike Herb nor the state medical
examiner’s office was willing to specify the cause of death beyond
“homicidal violence” after an autopsy Monday on Raymond Faulk.
Police earlier termed the death suspicious. Herb told The Oregonian
there’s nothing to indicate the public is at risk.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Fire investigators in Portland are trying
to figure out how cleaning a pan of tofu could cause an explosion
that broke out a window and resulted in $15,000 worth of damage.
Fire Bureau spokesman Paul Corah tells The Oregonian that a
25-year-old woman in the Old Town district said she cooked tofu
Sunday night, and as she washed the pan, a blast knocked a
4-by-6-foot window into the street.
