Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
BEND, Ore. (AP) – Police say eight out of a dozen protesters
seeking more town hall meetings with Congressman Greg Walden have
been cited for criminal trespass after refusing to leave Walden’s
office in Bend. Police say those cited last evening ranged in age
from 22 to 73. KTVZ reports that members of the Occupy
Congressional District 2 movement want Walden to hold at least five
town halls by next April. A Walden staffer told protesters that the
Republican will have town halls in Rufus and Fossil.
PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – More than 700 friends, relatives and law
enforcement officers turned out for a memorial honoring an eastern
Oregon correctional officer killed when he stopped to help a person
he thought was a stranded motorist. Oregon prisons chief Max
Williams said the life and selflessness of Buddy Ray Herron should
inspire others. Prosecutors say they’ve charged 22-year-old Joshua
Weeks with murder.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon officials say guards at the state
penitentiary at Salem broke up several fights involving about 50
inmates in the prison yard. They say two staffers and one inmate
suffered minor injuries in the fights yesterday afternoon and
multiple prisoners were taken to disciplinary segregation. The
prison has been placed on modified lockdown.
COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – Lawyers for the state of Oregon have asked
a federal agency to revoke permits for a liquefied natural gas
terminal in Coos Bay and its pipeline. The state says the Jordan
Cove development originally was designed to import gas from
overseas, but now is looking for permission to export it. The World
newspaper reports that state lawyers argue the result would be to
boost natural gas prices domestically and hurt the economy, so the
project is no longer in the public interest.
