Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) – Southern Oregon University and Jackson
County health officials are hoping to get money to fund a study
looking at Ashland’s low rate of children vaccinations. The Mail
Tribune reports that in 2010, 25 percent of Ashland students didn’t
get all their vaccines, more than double the percentage in 2001.
Jackson County commissioners will decide today whether to provide
$10,000 to pay for the study.
JOSEPH, Ore. (AP) – Oregon biologists have found another gray
wolf, bringing the state’s known population to 25. The Oregonian
reports that photos captured by a remote camera show that the
state’s Wenaha pack produced a pup earlier this year. The photos –
from a forest in western Wallowa County – show a half-grown young
wolf with a full coat of gray fur. They provide the first
indication that the pack’s alpha male and female reproduced.
UNDATED (AP) — A report released by a police group shows the
number of U.S. law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty
this year has jumped 13 percent from the year before. The National
Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund released said today 173
officers died in the line of duty, up from 153 deaths the year
before. Sixty-eight officers were killed by gunfire in 2011, 15
percent higher than last year. Rainier Police Chief Ralph Painter
was shot dead during a Jan. 5 struggle with a suspect who was
accused of taking Painter’s pistol from his belt.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a man driving with his three
children was arrested for investigation of drunken driving after
the car stalled near a Portland bridge. Lt. Robert King says
officers responded to a report of a stalled car Monday evening and
wound up arresting Daniel Lee Sherman. King says they later learned
that the children had been texting their grandmother with concerns
about their father’s driving. King says the children – ages 10, 9
and 3 – were released to the custody of their grandmother.
