Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – Convicted of killing a highly decorated
Marine Corps flying ace, Jesse Fanus was the youngest person on
Oregon’s Death Row when he was sentenced to death in 1999 at age
19. Now a Marion County judge has overturned that sentence. The
32-year-old Fanus argued that lawyer Mark Hendershott failed to
adequately represent him both at trial and at his sentencing. A
judge found that Hendershott failed to portray abuse Fanus had
suffered, which might have swayed jurors. Fanus was convicted of
killing an 82-year-old pilot in 1998.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon authorities have identified a
61-year-old man strangled at a Salem-area motel. The Marion County
district attorney’s office identified the victim yesterday as
Jeffrey Stow. His body was found Monday after police responded to a
report of a disturbance at the Holiday Lodge. A 22-year-old man
arrested at the scene, Hugh Edward Crow II, has been arraigned on
murder and burglary charges. He’s due back in court Jan. 13.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Michael Jordan has a job that doesn’t exist
in Oregon state law, and he calls the post “still a figment of the
governor’s imagination.” But Jordan has big-time authority, a
mandate from the governor to oversee the day-to-day operations of a
state government with 92 agencies and 150 boards and commissions in
a way that leaves elected officials free to set policy. Gov. John
Kitzhaber calls him the state’s “chief operating officer.”

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) – An Oregon football player helped a
choking diner during the traditional Beef Bowl, which brings the
teams playing in the Rose Bowl to Lawry’s in Beverly Hills for
prime rib. Paul Diamond began choking a bit while eating at the
restaurant yesterday. Oregon guard Mark Asper performed the
Heimlich maneuver on Diamond, helping him cough up the meat.
Diamond’s son Tom is an Oregon senior. The Rose Bowl is Monday.
