SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – Lane County prosecutors had been
seeking to install an alcohol interlock device on the car of a
Veneta man before he crashed the vehicle on Christmas night,
killing himself and seriously injuring three others. The
Register-Guard reports that Jonathan Golz had been arrested four
days before the wrong-way crash for failing to appear in court Dec.
1 on a motion to require the lock device on his car. Records show
police took Golz to jail after arresting him Dec. 21, but he was
freed Dec. 22 after agreeing to appear at a Jan. 10 hearing.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Authorities have identified a 61-year-old man
who was strangled at a Salem-area motel. A 22-year-old man arrested
at the scene has been arraigned on murder and burglary charges.
Marion County prosecutors identified the victim yesterday as
Jeffrey Stow. His body was found Monday night after police
responded to a report of a disturbance at the Holiday Lodge. Hugh
Crow II in the county jail awaiting a hearing Jan. 13.
ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – Convicted of killing a highly decorated
Marine Corps flying ace, Jesse Fanus was the youngest person on
Oregon’s Death Row when he was sentenced to death in 1999 at age
19. Now a Marion County judge has overturned that sentence, finding
that Fanus’ lawyer failed to portray the abuse Fanus suffered as a
youth, which might swayed have jurors deciding his punishment.
Douglas County prosecutors tell the Roseburg News-Review that
they’ll vigorously pursue a death sentence if a new sentencing
hearing is required.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (AP) – A University of Oregon football
player applied the Heimlich Maneuver on man choking on a piece of
food in Beverly Hills. The Oregonian reports that tackle Mark Asper
performed the maneuver yesterday at the Lawry’s Beef Bowl, a Rose
Bowl tradition in which the competing teams try to out-eat each
other. Witnesses said the 6-foot-7, 325-pound Asper sprang into
action when the man began choking. Asper performed the maneuver,
and a piece of beef flew out of the man’s mouth.
