     EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Eugene police say a bus driver helped them
arrest a bank robbery suspect. Officers alerted LTD bus drivers
last Friday afternoon to a description of a man sought after the
robbery of a U.S. Bank branch. KEZI-TV reports that one driver saw
a man matching that description changing clothes in the back of his
bus, so he flagged down a bicycle officer for help. Police arrested
39-year-old Chris Hayson of Springfield.

     GOLD BEACH, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say a man reported to have
gone into the surf in a heavy coat and boots, possibly to rescue a
dog, was swept out to sea and is presumed drowned near Gold Beach.
The World of Coos Bay reports the man had been identified as
48-year-old K.C. Anton of Veneta. Police said they found the
remains of his dog Saturday, but Anton’s body had not been found.
  

    MILTON-FREEWATER, Ore. (AP) – A man sought in the shooting death
of his neighbor in Milton-Freewater has been arrested in Walla
Walla, Wash. Walla Walla County Sheriff John Turner says a deputy
spotted a pickup truck carrying 49-year-old George West Craigen on
Sunday and, once more officers arrived, pulled it over. Both
Craigen and driver Jason Stiller of Milton-Freewater were taken to
jail for Friday’s shooting of Cecil “Rob” Carter.
    

  ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a goat owner’s
suspicions led them to arrest a man troopers say planned to
sacrifice a goat before the New Year. KPIC reports that a southern
Oregon woman called police to say a man had asked to buy one of her
goats. A state trooper who talked to the man says he had planned to
steal the animal and was in the process of writing an apology note.
Police say Hunter Goldberg was arrested and booked into the Douglas
County Jail for investigation of aggravated animal abuse,
trespassing and conspiracy.
    
     ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – The only Sears store in Oregon to be
closed in the latest round of cuts is in Roseburg, where plans are
under way to recruit new retailers. The Sears store at Roseburg
Valley Mall is expected to close by the time its lease expires – at
the end of April, the Roseburg News-Review reported. The store has
been at the mall since it opened in 1980.
 
     SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Police say a 3-year-old child killed in a
head-on crash north of Salem was sitting in her father’s lap in a
mini-van when another car crossed the center line and collided with
the vehicle. The child was identified as Yamulet Torres-Ramirez.
The Salem Statesman Journal says she was thrown from the mini-van.
State police say the driver of the car also was killed in the crash
Sunday. He was identified as 31-year-old Jose Gonzalez.
    
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Once again, the case of an Oregon serial
killer is going to the state Supreme Court. Dayton Rogers has three
times been sentenced to death for killing six women in 1987. They
were tortured, stabbed and mutilated. Their bodies were dumped in a
Molalla forest. The court has twice overturned death sentences. In
2006 Rogers was again sentenced to death. That sentence will be in
front of the court on Jan. 12.
     
     SEATTLE (AP) – Justin Wilcox is leaving Tennessee for a chance
to be the answer to Washington’s defensive woes. Washington
confirmed yesterday the hiring of Wilcox as the Huskies new
defensive coordinator replacing Nick Holt, who was fired after
Washington surrendered 777 yards and 67 points in an Alamo Bowl
loss to Baylor. Linebackers coach Peter Sirmon is also leaving
Tennessee as well to take the same job with the Huskies.

     SEATTLE (AP) – Washington running back Chris Polk will forgo his
senior season and enter the NFL draft. Polk and the school
confirmed the move yesterday. He’ll leave Washington as No. 2 on
the career yards rushing list with 4,049, trailing Napoleon
Kaufman. Polk holds the career school records for carries (799),
average per game (101.2) and 100-yard games (21). He had the
second-best rushing game in school history in the 2010 Apple Cup.
