Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
BEND, Ore. (AP) – A La Pine driver has been sentenced to more
than two years in prison for a fatal crash near Bend that occurred
while he was texting his girlfriend who was sitting next to him.
Deschutes County Circuit Judge Alta Brady told 29-year-old Erik
Conn it was as if he were driving blindfolded last June when he
drove into a 16-year-old riding a bike. Forrest Cepeda was crushed
into a rock wall and died. KTVZ reports Cepeda’s family complained
the sentence was too lenient for someone who was texting the person
right next to him before the crash.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Drug-sniffing dogs will soon be in some
Josephine County schools. The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports
that a divided Three Rivers School Board has voted to allow dogs
from the sheriff’s office to search for illegal drugs.
Superintendent Dan Huber-Kantola says officials cannot pretend
students don’t have access to drugs. One board member voted against
the proposal, saying dogs won’t find alcohol or prescription drugs.
COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – Police in Coos Bay say they arrested an
alleged carjacker when he stopped to buy gasoline for the stolen
vehicle. Authorities say the man threw a woman out of her car in a
grocery store parking lot on Tuesday, then sped off. The World of
Coos Bay reports the man pulled into a gas station a few miles away
and asked to pay cash, but the attendant was suspicious when the
man seemed relieved when police drove past the station. He tried to
drive away but crashed the stolen car into a post and was arrested.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Daimler Trucks North America says it will
hire 1,100 workers to build long-distance trucks at its NC
Freightliner plant in North Carolina as it bulks up after the
recession. The Portland-based company made the announcement today
at the factory about 50 miles north of Charlotte.
