Highway 126 closed due to high water – Flood evacuation notice still in effect

Approximately three feet of water accumulated under the railroad bridge on Highway 126 at Mapleton at high tide this morning.

Highway 126, three miles east of Florence was closed just before eight this morning as the rain swollen Siuslaw River continued to back up due to high tides.   Oregon Department of Transportation officials say water is crossing or standing at several locations between Mapleton and Florence.

Residents of the Mapleton area continue under a flood evacuation notice this morning and are advised to seek high ground while routes are open.  The Florence Events Center has opened as an evacuation center for residents in Western Lane County who have evacuated or are without power.
