Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The on-time graduation rate for Oregon
high schools rose 1 percentage point in 2011 compared with the
previous year to 67 percent. The figures being released today show
that 1 out of 3 students in last year’s class dropped out – more
than 11,000 people. Gov. John Kitzhaber calls the rate unacceptable
and wants the Legislature to require every school board to spell
out how fast it aims to raise its graduation rate.
SEATTLE (AP) – “Barefoot Bandit” Colton Harris-Moore is
scheduled to be sentenced today in a Seattle federal courtroom for
his two-year international crime spree of break-ins and boat and
plane thefts. The 20-year-old pleaded guilty last month to state
crimes and was sentenced to seven years. Among his crimes —
stealing a boat in southwestern Washington to go to Oregon.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The autopsy shows a suicidal man shot by
Portland police Wednesday died of a single gunshot to the head. The
two officers who fired at Brad Lee Morgan have been place on leave
for an investigation and review by a Multnomah County grand jury.
The Oregonian reports the shooting has some thinking the police
bureau should return to a policy of having a special crisis
intervention team on duty to respond to such calls.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a Portland homeowner shot a
suspected burglar with a gun firing rubber bullets. The man told
police he caught the suspect before 4:00 this morning trying to
break in his back door. After he was shot, the suspect fled.
Officers searched the neighborhood and found a man who had been hit
by at least one rubber bullet.
