EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – An effort is afoot to unionize 2,000 faculty
members at the University of Oregon. The Register-Guard reports
(http://is.gd/ZjQzx2 ) that advocates have started fanning out to
ask supporters to sign cards seeking state recognition for a new
labor organization. The group United Academics of the University of
Oregon began collecting cards from its strongest supporters earlier
this month and has since expanded its efforts.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 15-year-old boy whose kayak capsized on
the Willamette River was in critical condition Sunday at Oregon
Health and Science University after rescuers pulled him from the
water and performed CPR. Chad Berg was kayaking with his father and
another man Saturday afternoon near Albany when his kayak filled
with water and he fell in.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An audit has found that 16 security guards
for a Portland security company were working without completing
their state-required certification. The August audit of Pacific
Patrol Services was prompted by a complaint to the state by a
skateboarder who alleged he was falsely arrested and battered in
2009 by a security guard who was trying to exclude him from the
downtown square.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police are investigating a fatal
hit-and-run. They say a man was hit and killed along Southeast
Foster Road on Saturday night by a vehicle that may have been a
dark pickup or SUV. Authorities haven’t released the victim’s name,
pending notification of his family.
