Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
FAIRVIEW, Ore. (AP) – The mother of a man killed by Fairview
officers disputes the police account of the shooting. Sandra Kelley
called police Friday night when her 37-year-old son Larry McKinney
came home drunk. She tells The Oregonian she was outside with
officers at the bottom of a staircase when her son came to the door
of their second-floor home holding a kitchen knife. She says he
didn’t talk or move toward officers. She says they told him to drop
the weapon and fired seconds later. Sgt. Bernie Meyer would say
only that the officers were threatened.

FOREST GROVE, Ore. (AP) – Police have arrested a man in the New
Year’s Eve shooting that injured a 7-year-old boy in Forest Grove.
Police say a Cornelius man admitted he fired a handgun to celebrate
the new year but thought the bullets were hitting the ground. He
was arrested yesterday on charges of unlawful use of a weapon and
reckless endangering. A Hillsboro man also was arrested on charges
of witness tampering in the case. The injured boy is expected to
make a full recovery.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Multnomah County medical examiner’s
office is investigating the cause of death for a man whose body was
found along the Sandy River at Corbett yesterday afternoon. The
discovery was by a fisherman across from the Lewis and Clark State
Park.

OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – Clackamas County commissioners are
considering asking Canby ferry riders to pay more of the cost. Most
cars are charged $2 for the trip across the Willamette River
between Wilsonville and Canby. The Oregonian reports commissioners
discussed the subsidy last week as they decided to spend $1.7
million for a new electric propulsion system. The work would put
the ferry out of service from late February to mid-summer. Ferry
riders could see higher fares when service resumes.
