Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Three family members lost six nights in
the rugged forest of southwest Oregon used their dead cellphone and
a sheath knife to flash a signal at the helicopter pilot who found
them. Dan Conne (con-NAY’) said yesterday from his hospital bed in
Gold Beach, Ore., they spent the nights huddled in a hollow log
with nothing to eat, and considered sacrificing their dog Jesse for
food before they were found. A volunteer helicopter pilot looking
outside the search area Saturday spotted Dan and Belinda Conne,
both 47, and their 25-year-old son Michael on the edge of a deep
ravine in tall timber.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A former detective lieutenant in Riverside
County, Calif., and a retired supervisor of homicide detectives in
Salem have teamed up on a volunteer mission to try to solve Salem’s
19-cold-case homicides dating to 1993. The Statesman Journal says
John Schultz and Jim Miller haven’t been able to solve one yet, but
they spend many hours a week sifting through binders of handwritten
notes and yellowed type sheets. Miller says he can’t stand thinking
people got away with those killings.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon’s state Legislature is on track to
add three no-fishing marine reserves off the coast. The Oregonian
says that would amount to 38-square-miles of ocean wilderness
despite continued concerns from fishing groups. Coastal legislators
from both parties have signed off on Senate Bill 1510, partly out
of concerns that ocean conservation groups might otherwise push a
statewide ballot measure to cover more of Oregon’s biologically
rich territorial sea.
TILLAMOOK, Ore. (AP) – Changes at the Tillamook Cheese Factory
have left 47 workers jobless as the cooperative streamlines its
operations in Oregon, Idaho and Utah. The workers were assigned to
the factory’s packaging operation. The Oregonian reports that they
punched out for the last time on Saturday. The Tillamook County
Creamery Association announced last month it was cutting the
packaging operation because it was inefficient.
