ONTARIO, Ore. (AP) – An autopsy has found that an inmate at
Snake River Correctional Institution who died Feb. 2 was killed.
State Police said yesterday the suspect is the cellmate of
28-year-old Michael Clarence Hagen. The cellmate’s name has not
been made public. The police said the case would go to the grand
jury in Malheur County after their investigation is done. Hagen was
serving time for robbing a Portland check-cashing store and
severely beating a clerk.
FAIRVIEW, Ore. (AP) – The police chief in the east Portland
suburb of Fairview says an officer fatally shot a man last month to
keep him from plunging a knife into another officer. Chief Ken
Johnson announced yesterday that a grand jury found no criminal
wrongdoing by Officer Mike Morton in the Jan. 27 shooting death of
37-year-old Larry McKinney. Johnson says Officer Joe Kaiser turned
to turned to avoid a knife thrust and yelled to alert his partner,
Morton. The chief says Morton pulled his gun and fired.
SOUTH BEND, Wash. (AP) – An Oregon businessman and former police
officer has been sentenced to nearly 85 years in prison for the
2009 murder of his ex-girlfriend on a busy Washington beach. The
Daily News of Longview said 49-year-old Brian Brush was sentenced
yesterday in Pacific County, Wash., Superior Court. A jury
convicted Brush of first-degree murder last December in the Sept.
11, 2009, fatal shooting of Lisa Bonney near downtown Long Beach.
The shotgun shooting occurred during an annual car rally that draws
thousands of people to Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber’s proposed overhaul of
the Oregon Health Plan has passed out of a legislative
subcommittee, one step closer to a vote in the Senate. The bill was
approved late Wednesday after changes were made to address concerns
raised by lawmakers and the health care industry. But some
Republicans still aren’t satisfied with provisions limiting medical
malpractice liability. Lawmakers anticipate a spirited debate in
the Ways and Means Committee today.
