PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Police Chief Mike Reese is
defending his officers’ use of force by saying they’re confronting
twice as many suicidal calls as they were a decade ago. Police took
1,200 such call in 2011, compared with 630 in 2001. The Oregonian
reports the actual number of suicides in Multnomah County did not
rise as dramatically – 83 in 2001, compared with 111 in 2009.
CRESCENT, Ore. (AP) – Two people are dead and three are injured
after a car and a pickup truck collided last night on Highway 97
near Crescent. KTVZ reports icy conditions were reported at the
time. The crash closed the highway for three hours.
ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – Police say they found a bloody handgun in
the van driven by a man wounded by Astoria police, as well as a
rifle and ammunition. Police say the man pointed a gun at officers
when he opened his motel room door. They fired. He fled, and was
stopped after a chase on Highway 26. The Washougal, Wash., man is
at a Portland hospital with gunshot wounds to a shoulder and arm.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – An Eagle Point man has pleaded not guilty
in Medford to charges alleging he and his teenage son went on a
deer-poaching spree this winter. Charles Douglas Cochran was
arrested Monday in a raid on his home where state police seized 21
sets of blacktail antlers, pelts from bobcats and foxes, and game
meat. Also seized from the home were four rifles and a bow.
