Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Senate is expected to vote this
week on a proposal to give a reprieve to more than 1,600 people
dropped from a property tax deferral program intended to help
seniors and people with disabilities stay in their homes. The
decades-old program had faced a shortfall, and the Legislature last
year voted to tighten the eligibility requirements. As a result,
the number of participants was cut in half – and thousands of
people were required to pay property taxes they hadn’t anticipated.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man who was fatally shot outside a
bowling alley in southeast Portland has been identified as a
bouncer there. The Oregonian says 30-year-old Robert Green died of
a gunshot wound near the doorway of Grand Central Restaurant and
Bowling Lounge. The shooting occurred about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. No
arrests were immediately made.
MEDVORD, Ore. (AP) – Medford police say a 14-year-old girl has
died after mixing helium gas and alcohol at a home. KTVL-TV says
police responded to a 911 call late Saturday from an Alameda Street
address where the caller said a teenage girl was not breathing and
was unconscious after drinking alcohol and inhaling helium.
Responding officers found Ashley Long, who was taken to Rogue
Valley Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Twenty-one-year-old Katherine Diane McAloon was arrested.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland man who stabbed his pregnant
wife because she threatened to leave him over his drug use has been
sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison. Brian Shaun Nickel
had been using the animal tranquilizer ketamine when he attacked
Elaine Winn in July. Winn was three months pregnant. She later
divorced him and gave birth to a healthy baby last month, but she
continues to suffer from the tendons in her hands that were severed
as she tried to defend herself from him.
