EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A Lane County Circuit Court judge has
entered not guilty pleas for a man charged with manslaughter and
criminally negligent homicide in the death of a bicycle rider in
Eugene. The 53-year-old Springfield man, James Gleich (glike), was
arrested Sunday after a grand jury indictment last week, following
a lengthy investigation by Eugene police. The accident happened
Aug. 29 as Mingo Pelkey was making a left turn at an intersection
near her apartment.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The state Board of Higher Education is
expected to approve a new policy Friday that would ban guns on
Oregon’s seven university campuses. A court decision in September
upheld the right of students and faculty with concealed weapons
permits to bear arms. But it also said the board has authority to
control its property. The Oregonian reports the new policy would
require people to agree not to carry guns if they wanted to do any
business on university property.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – The Josephine County sheriff’s office
says a 13-year-old girl escaped from a kidnapper by jumping from
his pickup truck. The girl told deputies she was riding her bike
near Lincoldn Savage Middle School about 4 p.m. yesterday when the
man dragged her into his truck. She says he drove about a mile
before she opened the door and jumped out. She ran about three
miles to a friend’s house for help. She suffered minor scrapes and
scratches. The man is still at large.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a man is wounded after a
shooting late last night in a southeast Portland neighborhood.
Witnesses told police they heard a gunshot and a vehicle speeding
out of the area. Police expect the 29-year-old victim will survive.
