SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon lawmakers have blown through their own
deadline for wrapping up their work by the end of February, but
have reached an agreement to advance two of the governor’s three
initiatives that have been stalled in legislative committees. A
spokesman for Gov. John Kitzhaber says committees will advance his
proposal to streamline early childhood education programs and a
measure implementing a health insurance exchange. Lawmakers have
until next week to finish up.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Occupy Portland demonstrators took to the
downtown streets again yesterday, pushing through lines of police
and chanting in front of businesses in some of the first forceful
physical collisions between protesters and police on bicycles. A
police spokesman reported seven arrests, including three people who
bike-locked themselves at the Wells Fargo Center, two arrested
along the route for criminal mischief and two at the Bank of
America for criminal trespass. The protesters said the march was
aimed at the nonviolent disruption of businesses in protest of the
American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland man has pleaded guilty after
being accused of conspiring with his parents in thefts including
the faked hijacking of an armored car in Portland that netted $3
million. The Oregonian says 39-year-old Vincent Cabello appeared in
federal court yesterday to plead guilty to two conspiracy counts
involving bank larceny and money laundering. He and his parents
were charged in 2010 in three thefts investigators called inside
jobs disguised as robberies of armored cars.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Multnomah County sheriff’s department
says a corrections deputy has been arrested and jailed on charges
of having sexual contact with a woman in custody at the county’s
Inverness Jail. A statement from the sheriff’s office identified
the deputy as 59-year-old Eddie James Miller, a corrections deputy
since 1991. It says the charges are custodial sexual misconduct and
official misconduct. The Oregonian reports it occurred in January.
The paper says Miller has pleaded not guilty.
