Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – In the final hours of the regular session,
Oregon legislators approved Gov. John Kitzhaber’s request to
require that school districts sign achievement compacts with the
state. The measure is an extension of Kitzhaber’s plan approved
last year to create a powerful oversight board. Proponents say the
measure will improve education. Opponents say the measure does
nothing to help schools struggling with tight budgets.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A fire in a stairwell prompted the
evacuation of about 40 residents of a Eugene retirement home. The
Register-Guard reports that no one was injured yesterday afternoon
in the fire at Churchill Estates. Residents were allowed to return
after the fire was extinguished. The cause is under investigation.

MILWAUKIE, Ore. (AP) – Neighbors tried but couldn’t rescue a
91-year-old man from a fire at the home where he had lived nearly
six decades. Clackamas Fire District 1 also says firefighters
weren’t able to find the man right away in the blaze Sunday
evening. The Oregonian says 91-year-old Jim Saltos was eventually
found dead of smoke inhalation. Investigators say the fire was
caused by a wood stove.

COBURG, Ore. (AP) – As part of a restructuring plan, Navistar
International Corp. plans to lay off 255 workers at its Monaco RV
plant in Coburg. Monaco plans to move the production and some
management work to Indiana and move some management jobs to
Navistar headquarters in Illinois. Navistar says it expects to keep
150 jobs in Coburg, producing towable RVs and running a service
center.
