WASHINGTON (AP) – Michelle Obama will speak at three college
graduation ceremonies this spring, including Oregon State
University’s. OSU has been recognized for its efforts to promote
healthy communities, a key priority of the first lady. Mrs. Obama’s
brother, Craig Robinson, is the coach of the school’s men’s
basketball team.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The crew of a Horizon Air flight from Long
Beach, Calif., called authorities before a stopover at Portland
International Airport to report an unruly child who was not
following instructions to remain in a seat. The plane was met last
night by police who talked to the flight crew and the child’s
family. Police tell The Oregonian no charges resulted from the
incident, but the family did not continue with the flight to
Vancouver, British Columbia.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Bottled water foes are asking Gov. John
Kitzhaber to reject a deal to allow Nestle to build a bottling
plant at Cascade Locks in the Columbia River Gorge, 45 miles east
of Portland. Nestle wants to bottle spring water, some of which is
now used at a nearby salmon hatchery. Nestle is asking the governor
to approve a water rights swap that would allow the hatchery to tap
city well water. A Washington DC-based Food and Water Watch, is
asking the governor to reject Nestle. Kitzhaber hasn’t taken a
position yet.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Organizers are seeking $223,000 in private
donations to build a memorial for fallen state troopers at the
Oregon State Police headquarters on the Capitol Mall in Salem. It
would honor the 33 troopers who have lost their lives in the line
of duty.Organizers say the new memorial is not intended to take
anything away from a memorial at the Department of Public Safety
Standards and Training academy. Fallen state troopers are among the
more than 160 names of law enforcement officers in Oregon.
