PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Talks continue between negotiators for
Cascade Steel Rolling Mills and more than 300 striking workers at
the McMinnville steel mill. The union contract expired April 1 and
the steelworkers walked off the job Sunday. Pay and health
insurance are two of the disputed issues. The sides have been
meeting with a federal mediator in Forest Grove, and a spokesman
for the union local says talks were ongoing yesterday. Cascade
Steel melts scrap to produce rebar and other products.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Major medical marijuana growers are
changing their ways in Oregon after federal agents raided selected
“monster grows” to send the message that the state law can’t
serve as cover for black market sales. The Associated Press
obtained state figures which show the number of gardens registered
as serving multiple patients will be far fewer in 2012 – down 26
percent for those serving five patients or more and down 36 percent
for those serving 10 medical pot patients or more.
NORTH BEND, Ore. (AP) – The Coast Guard has rescued another
kayaker along the Oregon coast after his watercraft overturned. The
agency diverted a helicopter crew on Tuesday to Sunset Bay,
southwest of the entrance to Coos Bay, to rescue a 64-year-old man.
The crew spotted the man wearing a life jacket and floating next to
his overturned kayak. A Coast Guard rescue swimmer hoisted the man
into the helicopter and he was delivered to local medics on shore.
The kayaker was not identified.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – One of the best-kept secrets in television
history has been unmasked. “The Simpsons” creator Matt Groening
revealing that the Springfield in Oregon is the basis for the
hometown of his characters. The admission came in an interview with
Smithsonian Magazine published online yesterday. Groening says he
was inspired by the TV show “Father Knows Best,” which took place
in a place called Springfield. Springfield, Ore., is 100 miles
south of Groening’s hometown of Portland.
