PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A magnitude 5.9 earthquake has struck about 160 miles off the Oregon coast, but there are no reports of damage. The quake was reported at about 3:40 p.m. yesterday, west-northwest of the coastal city of Bandon, Ore. The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says no tsunami is expected. Doug Gibbons of the U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake is not related to two massive quakes in Indonesia yesterday. Oregon’s quake was about 8 miles below the surface.

WILSONVILLE, Ore. (AP) — Fire officials say a car that burst into flames on Interstate 5 south of Portland prompted a freeway shutdown in both directions as fire and police crews responded. The Oregonian reports that the car’s lone occupant was able to stop the Subaru Forester in the northbound right lane yesterday and get out just before the car caught fire. The fire was so hot the pavement below was damaged. Oregon Transportation Department crews did a quick patch before the road reopened.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — The executive director of the Linn-Benton Housing Authority is wanted in Delaware on an accusation she abandoned a son who had been adopted from that state. The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports that Cleo Klepzig faces a misdemeanor charge of child abandonment. The warrant was issued in 2007 and remains in effect. Klepzig says she returned the special-needs child to an office of the Family Services Division because he had been abusing a sibling.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber kept his veto pen stashed this year. The Democratic governor signed all 112 bills passed by the Oregon Legislature this year, the last 22 of them yesterday. Since beginning his third term last year, Kitzhaber has vetoed just one bill. The House of Representatives is now evenly divided between the major political parties, and a power-sharing agreement requires that all legislation have bipartisan support before reaching Kitzhaber’s desk.
