Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A 28-year-old Portland man has been given 180 days in jail and two years of probation for marijuana possession in Nebraska. Duyen Nguyen was sentenced yesterday under a plea deal after prosecutors reduced the charge. Nguyen was arrested in February 2011 after two vehicles were pulled over in Lincoln for driving too close to each other. The patrol says 38 pounds of pot was seized, and Nguyen and two other men were arrested.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – A fire official says an attempt to light a cigarette ignited natural gas in a Bend cottage yesterday, causing an explosion and fire that damaged the home and left one man critically injured. KTVZ reports two other houses were damaged to a lesser extent. A man identified as Michael Flint was flown to the Oregon Burn Center in Portland, where a spokesman said he was in critical condition last evening.

SILVERTON, Ore. (AP) – A state police bomb squad investigated what officers called a suspicious object in a wrecked car near Silverton yesterday morning. Police said the object’s appearance raised the possibility that it could be dangerous, and the bomb squad took steps from a distance to “render it safe.” The 21-year-old Turner man was hospitalized and is expected to live.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Trail Blazers President Larry Miller says the team has not reached out to the Los Angeles Lakers for permission to talk to general manager Mitch Kupchak. Miller would not comment specifically on an ESPN report that the Blazers want to interview Kupchak about the GM’s job in Portland. But he did say that that the Blazers had not taken the step of asking the Lakers for permission to talk with Kupchak.
