CRESCENT LAKE, Ore. (AP) – State police say a hostage situation at a southern Oregon cabin has ended with no fatalities. Following hours of negotiations, a police officer shot a man who allegedly kidnapped his former girlfriend last week in Hermiston. Police say 28-year-old Alberto Quiroz Martinez is expected to survive. The woman, 26-year-old Melody Kaye Mickel, was not injured. Mickel is believed to have willingly gotten into a car last week with her former boyfriend before vanishing for several days.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 46-year-old man considered a prime suspect in a 1997 killing in northeast Portland has been arrested in a small Outer Banks community in North Carolina. Portland Police Sgt. Pete Simpson says Samuel Lee Etheridge was taken into custody Monday by authorities in Dare County, N.C. Etheridge was living in the fishing village of Wanchese on Roanoke Island. Etheridge was arrested in connection with the death of 59-year-old John Frederick Phillips, who was killed at an apartment.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The father of an Oregon terrorism suspect called the FBI in August 2009 to warn that his son planned to fly to Yemen to become a violent jihadist. The phone call came to light Tuesday during an evidentiary hearing for Mohamed Mohamud. The 20-year-old Somali-American is charged with plotting to detonate what turned out to be a fake bomb at a Christmas-tree lighting ceremony in Portland in November 2010. A trial for Mohamud has been scheduled for October.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Law enforcement officials in Oregon are preparing to accept identification cards issued by the Mexican government to prove people’s identities during traffic stops and other police contacts. The effort was announced in a letter from Democratic Gov. John Kitzhaber (KIHTS’-hah-bur) that was read to activists at a May Day rally in Salem yesterday. It comes four years after Oregon began requiring driver’s license applicants to prove that they’re legally in the country.
