EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The state Board of Higher Education on Friday is expected to raise tuition an average of 3 percent at Oregon’s seven universities. At the University of Oregon, The Register-Guard reports a proposed 6 percent rise would add nearly $500 to push the cost of tuition and fees for undergrads to more than $9,300. Four years ago it was about $6,500.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – A 51-year-old woman who worked as a library aide at South Albany High School has been accused of having sex in her car with a 17-year-old student. Heidi Hyre also is accused of exchanging sexually explicit text messages with him and two other boys. She turned herself in to police yesterday and was jailed on child sex abuse charges under $180,000 bail.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Police say a driver was drunk when the car she was driving struck a blind man in a Salem crosswalk. Seventy-year-old John Dashney was in critical condition at Salem Hospital after the accident yesterday near his home. The Statesman Journal reports Dashney is a children’s book author and president of the Willamette chapter of the American Council of the Blind of Oregon. The Salem woman faces drunken driving and assault charges.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – The Josephine County sheriff’s office says it’s releasing 36 inmates today from the jail at Grants Pass, including people charged with robbery, assault, rape and other sex crimes. The office says the jail population is being reduced a number that can be safely managed by the 18 guards remaining after budget cuts.
