COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – The 2011 tsunami that devastated coastal towns in Japan also woke up the West Coast. Today thousands of people in Coos Bay, North Bend and Charleston are taking part in their first tsunami evacuation drill. Coos Bay Fire Chief Stan Gibson says the vivid images of last year’s tsunami in Japan made people on the Oregon Coast take the possibility much more seriously than before.

MILWAUKIE, Ore. (AP) – Police in the Portland suburb of Milwaukie say an 87-year-old driver accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake on a pickup truck at a carwash, briefly pinning an employee between the vehicle and a wall. Officers said the employee suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the mishap yesterday and was taken to a hospital. Police say crash details were forwarded to the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles for evaluation.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say they’ve thwarted a fake identity scheme in Eugene that echoes the counterculture the city is known for. They say Michael Snow applied for a birth certificate as “Winter Rain Waters.” He told a judge he was born in 1987 on “The Rainbow Farm” to “Misty Summer Rain” and “William Waters,” but his parents didn’t register his birth. The Register-Guard reports Snow had been convicted of rape and was wanted for failing to register as a sex offender.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Health Authority has tentatively certified 11 groups as the state’s first coordinated care organizations under an overhaul of the Oregon Health Plan. Applications from three organizations were rejected because they didn’t meet the legal criteria. Another was certified in four of the 12 counties it applied to serve.
