PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 49-year-old Beaverton woman has won $900,000 in a lawsuit against a 69-year-old Portland man who gave her a sexually transmitted disease. The Oregonian reports lawyers said it was the first time a person suing another for intentionally transmitting herpes went to trial in Oregon. The man’s lawyer tried to chip away at the woman’s credibility by arguing she was lying about her sexual history and may have had sex with other men who gave her the disease.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Two women have filed a $3 million lawsuit against Marion County, claiming they were sexually assaulted by a deputy while in jail. The lawsuit says the women were abused for more than a year by a guard at the work center where the women were assigned. The Statesman Journal reports the deputy was fired after his arrest in March. He’s due to appear in court on June 22 on 14 sex crime charges.
TILLAMOOK, Ore. (AP) – Portland Police Officer Sean Sothern has pleaded no contest in Tillamook to a charge of reckless driving and was ordered to spend five days in jail. He had been arrested in August for drunken driving while off-duty. The Oregonian reports as part of a plea deal, the judge dismissed four other charges, including attempting to elude police.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – It was a big cat in a Salem back yard — but not a cougar. Police had responded Friday to a report of a young cougar in the yard near a wooded area. The animal moved on without threatening anyone. A state wildlife biologist reviewed photos of the cat and determined yesterday it wasn’t a cougar. It’s a domesticated cat – a Maine-Coon breed that often weighs more than 20 pounds.
