Local News: Man Shot and Killed by Police ID’d; Florence Budget; Finalists for Mapleton Superintendent; Hazard Trees on 126W

Identity of man killed by police released…

Police say an 18-year old man, shot and killed by a SWAT team early Friday at a remote location south of Yachats had been a “person of interest” in an assault last month that injured a 46-year old man in Yachats.

Samuel Mullane was shot and killed as police were watching a residence 7-miles east of Highway 101 on Ten Mile Creek Road.  The home belongs to 54-year old Julie A. Hubeny who had been arrested May 12^th following that assault.  27-year old Matthew Hubeny and 25-year old Justin Wood were the subjects of arrest warrants related to that incident.

May 31^st,Police learned that the younger Hubeny, Wood and a third person of interest were at the remote residence.  Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies obtained a search warrant and were assisted by the Special Weapons and Tactics team of the Oregon State Police in preparation.  Police say Mullane confronted them with a rifle and three SWAT team members opened fire.  The 18-year old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Matthew Hubeny was taken into custody, but police say Wood is still at large.  Under state law a “deadly force investigations team” from multiple departments in Lane County, including Florence, has come together to investigate the shooting.

Florence City Council to Finalize Budget

Florence City Councilors will conduct five separate public hearings this evening… all part of what can be a complex process for determining the annual budget.  The first hearing will be on adjustments to the current year’s budget.  The next three are in relation to expected revenue for the coming year, including rate and fee increases required to offset additional expenses.

The final hearing will be on the proposed 2012-13 budget itself.  The council will also take action on four more fee adjustment proposals following the hearings, as well as a series of resolutions required to formalize the proceedings.  The council is also expected to appoint a sub-committee to conduct a regular review of the performance of the city’s municipal court judge.  The council meets this evening at city hall, beginning at seven pm

Finalists for Top Mapleton School Position Identified

Two finalists for the soon-to-be-open superintendent’s position in Mapleton have been identified by the school board in that community.  Jodi O’Mara is a Florence resident and is currently the principal of Blossom Gulch Elementary in Coos Bay.  Bryan Young is the Superintendent and Principal at Fort Sage Unified School District in Herlong, California.  Both will be introduced tomorrow between 4:30 and 5:3- at a public reception at the high school.  The Mapleton School Board is expected to select the successful candidate later this month.

Hazard Trees on 126W

Motorists on Highway 126 just east of Mapleton will be experiencing delays this week as crews work to remove several hazard trees.  The work, two-and-a-half miles east of Mapleton, will restrict travel to one-lane between 6:30 AM and five PM today, tomorrow and Wednesday.
