SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Authorities have arrested a Salem woman accused of swindling the Oregon Department of Revenue out of more than $2 million by filing a fraudulent state tax return. Krystle Marie Reyes was jailed in Marion County yesterday for investigation of fraud and theft. Court documents say Reyes in 2011 reported earnings of $3 million and claimed a refund of $2.1 million.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Two Republicans were successful in their write-in campaigns for Oregon statewide offices. Unofficial numbers released yesterday show Portland attorney James Buchal (BYOO’-kul) is the Republican nominee for attorney general and business consultant Thomas Cox will run for state treasurer. Buchal and Cox launched write-in campaigns after the GOP did not field candidates to run for treasurer or attorney general.

HERMISTON, Ore. (AP) – The mayor and four city councilors in the northeast Oregon community of Hermiston have survived a recall election. The East Oregonian reports that unofficial results from the Umatilla County elections office show more than half of those voting wanted to retain the five. Recall proponents were unhappy with what they perceived as mishandling of a leadership crisis in the police department.

SEASIDE, Ore. (AP) – Police say an 89-year-old man has been struck and killed by an SUV in Seaside. The Oregonian reports that witnesses told police the SUV struck Richard Brown while making a right turn. The crash is under investigation. Police say the driver was not intoxicated.
